Kate Shelley is known as an Iowa heroine who saved a passenger train from disaster on July 6, 1881. On a stormy night, Shelley crawled 700 feet across a wooden trestle over the Des Moines River with her father's lantern to stop the Midnight Express from crossing. In 1901, a new bridge replaced the trestle and was named after Shelley. The original high steel bridge is still standing and is officially called the Boone Viaduct. In 2009, the Union Pacific Railroad completed a new concrete and steel bridge next to it and named it the Kate Shelley Bridge. The bridge is 185 feet tall over the river and 2,685 feet long. These drone clips show the 1901 and 2009 bridges, which run parallel. Kate Shelley also told the rescuers where the first train had crashed, so they went there together and they were able to save some lives. Kate was a national hero. The railroad presented her with a gold medal, two barrels of flour, a car full of coal, and a lifetime train pass.
