Italy's Mt. Etna volcano erupts, spewing ash and lava again
SICILY, ITALY - MAY 12: Mount Etna, Europe’s tallest active volcano, erupted overnight on Monday, May 12, spewing ash and lava over Sicily’s landscape in its latest display of volcanic activity.
The eruption began at the southeastern crater, situated at an altitude of 2,900 meters (9,514 feet), according to the Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV).
Local media reported that ash from the eruption fell on several nearby settlements, particularly the town of Zafferana Etnea. The ash cloud spread mainly toward the east and southeast.
Despite the eruption, operations at Catania Airport, near the volcano, were not affected, and flights continued as scheduled.
Mount Etna, with an elevation of about 3,300 m (10,827 ft), is the tallest active volcano in continental Europe.
