Literature: Gordon Brown attends London Book Fair for discussion with Sebastian Faulks; ENGLAND: London: Earls Court: INT*** FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY ***Gordon Brown MP (Prime Minister) along to take seat on stage with Sebastian Faulks (Author/writer) and sat listening as chairman makes introductory speech SOT / Sebastian Faulks (Author/writer) making introduction and opening question SOTGordon Brown MP (Prime Minister) discussion on reading and literature SOT- Books are everything, my father was a minister of the church, we were surrounded by books, I grew up reading all sorts of books, not necessarily religious books, reading or some cases writing has been a great passion of my life, for a short period I had a series of eye injuries playing rugby, situation where you are blinded in hospital, prevented from reading, relying on Royal National Institute of the Blind for their talking book service, the ability to be able to read, pass that on to your children is crucial, my taste in books is very wide, sports books, football, rugby as well as some of your great fiction and other things- I was coming alive just after all the Look Back in Anger stuff, as I grew up and started reading lots of modern books, it was 'Room at the Top,' 'Saturday Night Sunday Morning', Kingsley Amis the radical, 'Lucky Jim' and all that, Salinger 'Catcher in the Rye', all had a very big influence on me when I was a teenager- British literature is really impressive, British screenwriting, plays, captivating America, British films, that's a spin-off from some of the great writing- There was a Sports Minister appointed a few years ago who go every one of the five questions on Radio Five wrong about British sport- I read a lot, particularly in the Summer, meet lots of politicians around the world who say they read two, three books a week, I can dip in and out of books, the big period for reading is the holiday period- Response to question on his book 'Courage', courage is not t...
