GUNNISON, COLORADO, APRIL 11, 2007- ABOVE: J. Wenum<cq> Area Wildlife Manager for the Colorado Department of Wildlife, right and Matt Kales <cq> Legislative Affairs Specialist for the US Fish and Wildlife Service, region 6 <cq> left, sit quietly in their car as they use binoculars to watch the mating rituals of the Gunnison sage grouse. 33% of Leks, where the birds do their mating, are on private land. There are about 50 Leks in the Gunnison Basin. The males have a strutting type dance to show dominance over one another. The males draw in air through their large airsacks in their chest and exhale creating a sound not unlike bubbles rising to the surface of water.
