Sunny side and shady side, The slopes of alpine valleys that are oriented on an east-west axis receive unequal amounts of sunshine. The slope facing south (the sunny side) receives solar rays at a higher angle of incidence. It is therefore warmer than the slope facing north (the shady side), whose slopes are only grazed lightly by the SunÍs rays.
