Kibbutz Be'eri Resident Visits Kibbutz For First Time Since Oct. 7 Attack

BE'ERI, ISRAEL - DECEMBER 19: Nirit Hunwald (C), a Kibbutz Be’eri nurse, visits destroyed homes with friends as she returns to her kibbutz for the first time since the October 7 Hamas attack on on December 19, 2023 in Be’eri, Israel. During the attack, Hunwald, along with paramedic Amit Man and doctor Daniel Levi, treated several injured members of the kibbutz rapid response team, including team member Yair Avital, at the Dental clinic in the center of the kibbutz. There, two other rapid response team members continued fighting off Hamas militants who were attacking the clinic, and both were killed. Avital found himself playing dead covered in debris, vomit and blood in a small kitchenette located in the clinic after several grenades were thrown inside the clinic. Hunwald took shelter hiding on the floor in a bathroom stall. While hiding, Hunwald texted her partner and kids (who were in the bomb shelter on the kibbutz) and her family saying her goodbyes. After two hours of hiding, Israel Defense Force soldiers arrived and Hunwald was rescued along with Avital. Hunwald recounted in an interview that, once rescued, she insisted in being reunited with her family before being evacuated from the kibbutz.
