1924 Winter Olympic Games - Bobsleigh
A bobsleigh used by the French team at the first Winter Olympic Games at Chamonix in 1924. An extremely rare survivor from the original Winter Olympic Games, the nose cone with traces of red paint, a depiction of a dolphin and inscribed DAUPHIN, and the steering wheel mechanism still intact. Bobsledding was still a fairly young sport in 1924, having been invented in the late 19th century. The Olympic track at Chamonix ran for a length of 1,370 metres, staring at an altitude of 1210 metres and finishing at 1054 metres above sea level. Switzerland I took the gold medal, with Great Britain II in second place and Belgium I taking the bronze. France II finished in 4th place. France I crashed out on the second run, but were allowed to complete the 3rd and 4th runs even though their subsequent times would not count in the final placings.
