Caucasian Wingnut tree
Arborist Anthony Willmington begins the process of chopping down a giant Caucasian Wingnut tree at Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens near Weymouth.Picture date: Thursday January 12, 2012. The 90 foot tall tree was planted in around 1845 by the 4th Earl of Ilchester, William Fox Strangways, but recent investigations found it to be extensively rotten within the 26 foot circumference trunk. The specimen is listed by the Forestry Commission as a Champion Tree of Great Britain. It will take around ten days to fell the huge tree which will be used for firewood. It is hoped that suckers will spring up from where the tree stood leading to a regeneration. (Photo by Chris Ison/PA Images via Getty Images)
