Pyramids of Meroe, Sudan

PYRAMIDS OF MEREO, SUDAN-JANUARY 15, 2013: The ancient city of Meroe (800 BC to 350 AD) is located 200 kilometers northeast of Khartoum near the Nile River and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. For several centuries, Meroe was the capitol of the Kingdom of Kush, whose borders spread to southern Egypt. Approximately 200 pyramids from the ancient city now remain in three groups as prominent features in the desert landscape. This image shows the northern pyramid field, which is made up of 41 Nubian pyramids dating from 300 BC to 350 AD. At approximately 7 to 9 meters tall, they are considered Nubian pyramids because of their small size and steep angles when compared to the Egyptian pyramids.
