Speeding Automobile Injures Pedestrians

A speeding car, which appears to have injured a number of people, is shown in a cartoon from Puck magazine, 1902. The car is being driven by the chauffeur of the owner/passenger. The title printed on the original cartoon reads, “As the Law Stands.” Text under the title reads, “Owner (to Chauffeur).—Don’t stop! It only costs about ten dollars apiece to run them down. I must break the record even if it costs a hundred!” The cartoon seems to be critical of laws and penalties related to careless and negligent actions by automobile drivers that result in injury to pedestrians.
