The Goldfield Ashes
CHARTERS TOWERS, AUSTRALIA - JANUARY 27: Spectator Brody Curran watches a social grade of cricket during the Goldfield Ashes January 27, 2007 in Charters Towers, Australia. Due to heavy overnight rain the three day cricket carnival was cancelled however several teams still came out and played. Every Australia Day weekend the small outback town of Charters Towers in North Queensland hosts a cricket carnival named 'The Goldfield Ashes'. In 1949 the Charters Towers Cricket Association extended an invitation to six town to play on Foundation Day. From those six teams the carnival has grown to a record 194 teams competing in 2007, making it the largest carnival of its type in the world. The Goldfield Ashes swells the 8000 strong population of Charters Towers, near Townsville, by about 3000 and attracts teams of solicitors, engineers and television crews from as far as Brisbane. Matches are played on 58 different playing fields, including some which are privately owned. It is one of the few sporting carnivals which caters for players of all levels of ability (Photo by Ian Hitchcock/Getty Images)
