Akrotiri Archaeological Site

Archaeological excavation of the prehistoric (2000 BC) village of Akrotiri on Santorini Island, Greece. The site was buried by ash from the Theran volcanic eruption in the middle of the second millennium BC, and is thus quite well-preserved. The settlement has been suggested as a possible inspiration for Plato's story of Atlantis. (Photo by Creative Touch Imaging Ltd./NurPhoto via Getty Images)
