A Bavarian soldier sharing his rations with children in a French home during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71, a conflict between the Second French Empire and the North German Confederation led by the Kingdom of Prussia. Lasting from 19 July 1870 to 28 January 1871. The mother in the illustration is uncertain of the wisdom of the situation but the children are starving and she is desperate.
