INDIA-UN-ENVIRONMENT-WATER

To go with story 'India-UN-environment-water' by Claire Cozens In this photograph taken on March 16, 2015, ten year-old Shivani (L), a young resident of the working-class suburb of Kailash Puri carries a bucket of water up to the room that she and three siblings and parents call home during a water delivery run by a water tanker in their neighborhood in New Delhi. Residents of this part of town used to drink water drawn from the ground with borewells, but that is now too toxic, and few can afford the expensive water purifiers that are a standard feature of Delhi's wealthier households. A new UN report to be launched in Delhi on March 19, 2015 will warn of an urgent need to manage the world's water more sustainably and highlight the problem of groundwater overextraction, particularly in India and China. The report says global demand for water is increasing exponentially, driven largely by population growth. AFP PHOTO / Roberto SCHMIDT (Photo credit should read ROBERTO SCHMIDT/AFP via Getty Images)
