Stoddart's England Cricket Team

The England cricket team published in "Black & White" on 27th April 1895 following their momentous victory over the Australian team in five Test matches from December 1894 until March 1985, bringing home the Ashes by winning the series 3-2. Australia had recovered from 0-2 down to 2-2 with the final match, played in Melbourne, a true decider. Notable among the team are team captain Andrew Stoddart (middle row, second left), Archie MacLaren (middle row, first left) who scored 120 and 20 not out in the fifth Test, Johnny Briggs (front row, left) who died seven years later at the age of 39, and Jack Brown (front row, right) who died two years after Briggs, aged just 35.
