Algerian jihadists arrived in Gao on June 29, 2012 to reinforce Islamist fighters in the northern Mali city after they chased Tuareg rebels from the town they had jointly occupied for three months, sources said. Ansar Dine leader Iyad Ag Ghaly arrived in the town on June 28, after the fighting a day earlier erupted between the Tuareg and Islamists resulted in the desert nomads being dislodged from all key positions in the city.
