Vattenfall To Possibly Withdraw From Coal-Based Energy In Lusatia

PEITZ, GERMANY - DECEMBER 04: Steam rises from cooling towers at night at the Jaenschwalde coal-fired power plant on December 4, 2014 in Peitz, Germany. Vattenfall, the Swedish energy conglomerate that owns the Janeschwalde plant as well as nearby open-pit coal mines and other coal-burning power plants in Germany, is considering withdrawing from coal-related energy production in Lusatia, the region around Jaenschwalde. The governors of Brandenburg and Saxony, the German states that share Lusatia, are in Sweden today for talks over the future of the plants and mines, on which directly and indirectly 15,000 jobs in the region are dependant. The Jaenschwalde plant, originally built by the former government of East Germany, is the fourth biggest single emitter of CO2 gas in Europe. (Photo by Sean Gallup/Getty Images)
