Sikhs Hold Ceremonies For New Temple In Washington
WASHINGTON - FEBRUARY 19: Sikh priest Balbir Singh gives music lessons at the at the new National Gurdwara - or house of God - and Sikh Cultural Center which opened its doors on the famous Embassy Row February 19, 2006 in Washington, DC. Like all other men in his religion, Singh does not cut his beard or hair and keeps his head covered with a turban. In development for more than 20 years, the National Gurdwara opened its doors this weekend with a 48-hour nonstop reading of the Guru Granth Sahib, the 1,430-page Sikh holy book. A book of teachings and poetry from the original ten Sikh gurus, or teachers, the Granth is read straight through on shifts for special occasions like births and weddings. The center will serve as a national house of worship for Sikhs and host cultural programs, music classes, forums and other services for the growing community. (Photo by Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images)
