AUGUST 27, 2008. LONG BEACH, CA. Reflected in the binoculars of Dr. Lance Adams, staff vet at the Aquarium of the Pacific, is a stretch of the San Gabriel River where a colony of the endangered green sea turtles has established a habitat about 2 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean. Christina Fahy, a fishery biologist with the National Marine Fisheries Service searches the water as well. The turtles congregate near 2 warm water discharges pipes from electrical generating stations. A federal study is trying determine why they are so far from the ocean.
