Tar Sands in Alberta, Canada
FORT MCKAY, ALBERTA, CANADA - NOVEMBER 2008: Mel Grandjambe misses the times when his community was living off trapping. In the last 5 years, there have been no animals left in the forest around Fort McKay Reservation. Surrounded by the oil companies, they are being well compensated financially, but it is the end of their traditional lifestyle. Mel is works for his local municipality. To trap, he now has to go more than 4 hours away in the forest. Tar sands, or oil sands, are very dense and contain a form of petroleum The world's largest reserves of tar sands in Canada and Venezuela. Tar sands could equate to approximately two thirds of the total global petroleum resource. Until recently it was financially not viable to extract the oil from the sands, but new technology and rising oil prices have now made it viable. (Photo by Veronqiue de Viguerie/Getty Images)
