Sugarland: A Community Founded by Former Slaves

POOLESVILLE, MD - FEBRUARY 18: Gwen Hebron Reese, 73, sits in historic St. Paul Community Church in the Sugarland community on Wednesday, February 18, 2015, in Poolesville, MD. The resource center of the church houses the Sugarland Ethno History Project. Sugarland, a community in Montgomery County, was founded soon after the Civil War by former slaves. Some of the relatives of its founders fought on the side of the confederacy during the Civil War. The community has only three families left - including Reese's cousin Nettie Johnson La'Master, who lives in the house in which she was raised, the house her father built. At its height, there were more than 100 families living there. Many of the families left to find jobs, as did Reese, who lives in Gaithersburg. Still standing is this old white country church that was built in 1870 and the cemetery where former slaves are buried. (Photo by Jahi Chikwendiu/The Washington Post via Getty Images)
