Egyptians celebrate Sham el-Nessim in Cairo

CAIRO, EGYPT - APRIL 13: Egyptians enjoy at Al-Andalus Park within Sham el-Nessim, which is an Egyptian national holiday marking the beginning of spring, in Cairo, Egypt on April 13, 2015. Sham El-Nessim is a national holiday which is celebrated on the same day as Orthodox Easter Monday in Egypt. Sham El-Nessim, translated from Arabic as smelling the breeze, is celebrated every year on the Monday after Eastern Orthodox Easter. Although its date is determined by the Christian holy day, the spring celebration goes back 4,500 years to the time of the pharaohs, when it was called Shamo, or renewal of life, in reference to the beginning of the agricultural growing season.
