World War II Planes Fly Over U.S. Capitol In Honor Of VE Day

WASHINGTON, DC - MAY 8: A Douglas C-53 Skytrooper (top) and a Douglas C-47 Skytrain fly past the Washington Monument; part of a World War II planes fly over the National Mall to makr the 70th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) in Washington, DC on May 8, 2015. It's all part of the World War II Victory Capitol Flyover in honor of those who fought in the war and those that that worked stateside building the tanks and ships that made victory possible. The flyover included dozens of World War II aircraft flying in 15 historically sequenced warbird formations overhead. The formations represented the Wars major battles, from Pearl Harbor through the final air assault on Japan, and concluding with a missing man formation to Taps. Never before has such a collection of WWII aircraft been assembled at one location, to honor the large assemblage of veterans gathered at the WWII Memorial for a ceremony. On Saturday, May 9th, a selection of the planes will be featured at the National Air and Space Museums Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center at Washington Dulles International Airport for a one day exhibition.
