The city of Guimarâes lies in the North of Portugal, in the District of Braga. Due to its artistic wealth belongs to the inventory of the Heritage of humanity of the Unesco. Guimarâes, is the cradle of the Portuguese nation and an important medieval village that boasts many attractions as its Castle and its historic old town. Its foundation dates from the 10th century, when the Countess Mumadona Dias, widow of Hermenegildo Mendes, ordered to build a monastery. Around the monastery began to settle the first settlers of this beautiful city. The layout of Guimarâes responds to a medieval traces. Mumadona Dias ordered to build the great castle that we see today, this castle is located in the highest part of the city, on a hill from where you get good views of the town. Worth a visit is the Castle, which is in perfect state of conservation. Around the Castle arose another nucleus of population which was attached to the primitive through the Street of Santa Maria.In 1853, Guimarâes was awarded the title of city by the QueenDona Maria II. The ancient walls to enlarge the city collapsed at this time. The Martins Sarmento and the Countess Juncalsquares were built.
